As they say, this movie, Iron Man 2 really feels unfinished, in that I almost fell as if there could be more. That might be that because the first one did so well we ll believe or at least myself that the next one would be so good that I would cry. Sadly that did not happen.
Now don’t get me wrong, I loved Iron Man 2. I would see it again, and I will buy it on DVD later this year when it comes out. However, most of what I find wrong with the film are mostly cutting issues. The first half of he film is full of information that is throw at you so fast leaving little to no room to really allow you to understand it.
The start of the movie gave me an epic feeling, the music (which I’ll get into later) reminded me of the intro to Spider-Man 2. Showing us Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) creating his very own miniaturized arc reactor, which we do discover later how he was able to do this. The problem with this is not only did it mirror what we saw in the first film, it really leaves us with a blah feeling. I feel nothing for the death of Ivan’s father, even know the film later shows him as a bad guy or simply a man trying to make some money (who doesn’t) so when he dies so quickly, really the first scene of the movie is his quick death form what we never do learn about.
After that point the film jumps around, giving us this really nice flight scene of Iron Man coming in to the Stark Expo, being it’s 6 months later, the world knows he’s Iron Man and supposedly has maintain world peace. We meet the the other villain of the film, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) as well as Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson) and old. You really never get a chance to really understand where the film is trying to go, which really makes the movie seem weak in the first half and when the movie seem to become more stable near the middle to the final act, it does give you a sort of drag out feeling.
Never once did I feel I was pulled out of the movie, the action was perfect, I was shocked that there was very little in the movie. Most of the time, they give us more, I would almost say we got less. We get a very quick fight between Ivan and Tony (in the briefcase armor). The whole set up to this fight is very plain and makes no real sense to the rest of the film. Again this is form the movie jumping around showing us bits and parts.
I know it seems I’m really downing the movie, overall I would have to say this was about half as good as the first one was, but never really left you with that raw disappointment in your mouth like other comic book movies almost always seem to do. I never really felt that Ivan was the main villain, this comes form him just showing up, not really giving us much time to understand his madness in wanting to kill Iron Man. Just as quickly he disappears only to be enlisted by Hammer who as the film moves into the middle and into the final act, I got a deep feeling he was the real threat, I say that because of how it play out in the end.
